A Massacre in France: Eighty Years Ago
The Massacre at Oradour On this date in 1944, German troops entered the village of Oradour in France, gathered up 642 of the citizens of the small village and massacred them in the town center. According to James Holland, in his book “Normandy ‘44,” this was the result of a mistaken identification of the town as the home of an Allied soldier who killed a German in the days following D-day. Some 200 children were among those murdered on this day in 1944 in Oradour. May the memory of all these unfortunate innocents be eternal.
